Moscow is not all that expensive and cut-throat as it seems, if you know which hole to find. I must say Turkish and I did a very good job this evening. We went to the newly opened Chinese restaurant on 56, Pyatnitskaya Ulitsa (M.Novokuznetskaya) for dinner, not knowing the price range nor what to expect. Could be another Om Cafe on Novy Arbat - under Thai Cuisine but Hindu god statues all over its interiors.
But Mama Tao is 100% China-fied.

Except for the Oriental-looking waiter dressed in kung fu suit, doing Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon moves when filling hot water to our tea pot. That was totally unnecessary. It's a small place, less than 30 seatings. There were 3 plasma screens on the wall playing Chinese lyrics for Karaoke but the stereos in the restaurant were blasting house music. It could be China Dolls if I didn't know better LOL
Which Chinese joint have their workers perform stunts like that?
And the toilet. It is SO not China LOL

Turkish had Wonton Soup and I had Sour-Spicy Pork Tofu Soup for starters. Very the yums. The prawns in the Wonton were succulent and big. My boyfriend liked the seaweed in his soup. He was surprised at the slimy smooth texture, usually the dried seaweed laced around maki. He chokes because they stick on his throat LOL

We also ordered Peking Duck. Crispy skin, came with strips of cucumber and spring onions to go with Plum sauce and very thin wraps. We were lost at the Dim Sum page on the menu. They look so original with the bamboo basket, with Shrimp Dumplings (Har Kow) and Siew Mai, errr.. Pork Dumplings? One picture caught my eye, the Karipap lookalike. We had that too.

Ooohhhh.. and this is the FIRST restaurant we've been to that serves Redd's! But I can't give this place a 5/5. I really cannot. I'm sorry to say that this is Moscow (everything IS expensive) and being a professional gastronomer with an attitude, a full 5 is not negotiable LOL Even Turkish agreed. Plus, after they poured me my Redd's, they took away the bottle. Pfffftttt. Turkish had a Tsing Tao.

Last but not least, we ordered dessert. They don't have Red Bean nor Black Sesame Soup, nothing made out of glutinous rice but a lot of sweet stuff with Caramel. Is Caramel even Chinese? We had Fried Milk which was served, looking likemini dicks little pillows. Hahahahaa I was freaking bloated from all that we ate, but Mama Tao will definitely make it in Moscow. I can foresee her giving birth to many branches all over the city.

After we settled the bill, the chief waitress brought an antique box filled with Fortune Cookies to us. We both picked one each, opened ours nicely unlike the Russian lady who sat 2 tables behind Turkish, she bit into the cookie immediately and made a lot of noise about half the strip inside her mouth LOL
